Dave Clancy RKC, CSCS*D is the only person in Ohio to hold both the exclusive Russian Kettlebell Challenge Instructor Certification and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction designations. But it is not just the certifications that help Dave’s clients meet their goals. His enthusiasm for fitness is infectious, and that enthusiasm helps clients find their inner drive to succeed. “A personal trainer is not there to just count your reps or change out your weights,” says Dave. “It is the trainer’s job to devise a program to the clients’ specific needs and ensure that that plan is carried out in a safe and effective manner, all while motivating the client to push beyond perceived limits.” Many times, getting the self-doubt out of a client’s mind is the biggest thing a trainer can do, says Clancy. “Once clients believe in their abilities, the science of exercise can take over.” Clancy’s philosophy has been to take the scientific foundation of exercise and meld it with a practical approach that allows his clients to maximize achievements – whether it is athletic performance or improved everyday activity. “Exercise science by definition is a study of movement,” Dave says. “That is why a true exercise scientist will focus on improving movement patterns instead of building muscle. Sure the movement patterns will also build muscle, but the primary goal is to take the movement, and make it as efficient and as pain-free as possible. “Too often we focus on muscular development, to the detriment of overall health,” he says. “And the results are not as positive as they can be. “What good is it to have big biceps, if you can’t raise your arm past your shoulder without pain?” he asks. Clancy’s experience in movement patterns dates to his participation in triathlons and marathons more than 25 years ago. He also holds black belts in Hapkido and Taekwondo, and is a Crossfit Level II athlete. Dave has coached more than 25 Division I collegiate athletes. His training programs helped Columbus Academy’s boy’s tennis team win a state championship, and Gahanna Lincoln’s Hockey team earn the best record in school history. Clancy is active in the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and IDEA Health and Fitness Organization. He has traveled throughout the country to train under some of the most respected coaches in the business, including Tom Shaw, Todd Durkin, and Peter Twist.
